March 14, 2025 (Washington, D.C.) The Partnership to Fight Infectious Disease (PFID) released the following statement Friday in response to news the U.S. has already surpassed the total number of 2024 measles cases:
“Less than three months into 2025, the U.S. has already surpassed last year’s total of 285 measles cases — a stark reminder that declining vaccination rates and the spread of inaccurate information are fueling a dangerous resurgence of this highly contagious disease.
“The CDC announced today that there are currently 308 reported cases across 15 states in the U.S. Measles cases in Europe also doubled to 127,350 in 2024, a 25-year high. As spring break and summer travel season quickly approaches, we’ve already seen the consequences of international outbreaks spilling into America. Just last week, a traveler returning from abroad triggered a measles exposure warning at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
“Measles is not a routine childhood illness. It is a potentially deadly virus, as tragically seen with an otherwise healthy child in Texas last month. It can cause blindness, hearing loss, brain damage, and lifelong disability. Our country’s leaders must treat this growing crisis with the urgency it demands. Rewinding decades of success in eradicating and preventing contagious diseases with vaccines won’t deliver the healthy future Americans deserve. Officials must immediately reschedule the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting and ensure medical and scientific experts can continue their vital work without disruption.
“Downplaying measles outbreaks only risks further spread. Swift, evidence-driven leadership is essential to restore confidence in vaccination and prevent further unnecessary illness and loss of life.”
